On the streets of NY SPECIAL !!!

Today we caught up with Retna and Martha Cooper while Retna was working on the now imfamous wall on the corner of Houston and Bowery. Martha Cooper was photographing as Retna went up and down the white washed wall (Previously a Faile piece) writing his own brand of language which he is now known for world over. When asked what he had planned for this piece today he told us simply, ” I’m freestylin it! ” Dopeness.

On February 10th, Retna opened his first solo show in New York, “The Hallelujah World Tour”, presented by Andy Valmorbida and Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld, in conjunction with New York City’s Fashion Week. The tour will continue with exhibitions in London and Venice.

Check out more about Retna here

We like this. We will have images of the finished piece manana.

This Guy is Taiwanese…But does it matter?
Something needs to be said about this Jeremy Lin guy. I like the kid. He’s intelligent, hardworking, and from what I can see a damn good guy. However I want to reiterate he is not good cause he’s Asian. He’s good and he just happens to be Asian (Taiwanese to be exact). Lin is a baller no doubt but most people who aren’t Asian that are upset about his meteoric rise just dont want another Yao Ming fiasco to happen. Yao Ming almost every year was voted an NBA All-Star (even when injured) simply because the NBA allows China to vote for All-Star players. He was a good player but I often think maybe, just maybe he didn’t deserve it sometimes.
Now in regards to people ragging on Lin about his race, remember HE IS FROM CALI!!! Me and my homie were talking about this the other day. Yeah he looks Asian but the boy is strictly a Cali dude. Anybody can tell you Cali is the land of “crash”. We learn to live with each other even when we don’t like like each other. There are quite a few racial undertones in Cali but usually these are confined to specific cities and neighborhoods. That being said Jeremy Lin is a product of his environment not completely his race.
Lastly lets remember something: just because some idiot (Mayweather) makes a remark about how Lin being Asian is the reason why he is getting the notoriety doesn’t mean everyone shares those views ,I’m looking at you Jessica Hyun (another idiot…but maybe actually sick, like for real). Nearly all of my Asian friends would dismiss you in a hot minute for the remarks you made about black people. Some of my best friends are Asian. Hell I lived in Japan for two years I like Asians so much!
Lin’s appeal comes from being a good basketball player that happens to be Asian. Its not his fault, he can’t change that. I will say this though to my Asian friends around the world: Support Jeremy cause he’s a good player not because he’s Asian. This sh*t is fleeting. Its like saying “well we may never get another one” when there are plenty of Asian B-ball players who were and are great but because of their culture decided against a career in basketball. Just saying.
Now if he could just solve that “turnover” problem he has. Lol.
